Why The Left Loves John Walker Lind

The lefties cry out for John Walker, "He was willing to fight and die for his religious principles!" For this, they say, we must spare him.
Is there something in the phrase, "religious principles", that absolves someone from all crimes and excuses them from all punishment? Would the left rally in support of a Satanist accused of butchering babies on a sacrificial alter? Okay, not a good example. How about someone who, based on his religious beliefs, risks the death penalty by killing homosexuals or abortion doctors. I don't think you would see many editorials pleading for mercy on his behalf.
So, why does the left choose this soldier fighting on this particular side to make their stand for religious principle? Considering the venomous hatred, readily displayed by the left, for the religious principles that form the basis of western civilization, and considering that the Taliban is dedicated to the annihilation of both that religion and that civilization, the reason for their solicitude toward John Walker becomes clear. He is a soldier in their army.
