Petey Page

Petey is Smokey's mother's friend.   They are homeless and always together wandering the neighborhood of my brother Greg in West Orange, NJ.   He, like Momma Cat, was probably abandoned there by some people whose life situation no longer allowed them the luxury of a pet.   That is, of course, being generous.   Perhaps he was just inconvenient.   Whatever the need or motivation, abandonment to the streets is the cruelest decision that can be arrived at.   I first saw Petey when I visited for July 4th weekend, 2008.   He was not using his rear leg and had an awful looking, open red wound on his foot.   Greg said he had it for a while. So, when I got my vacation a month later I went down and got him.   He was still not using that leg at all though the wound had healed somewhat.   He was sweet and docile from the moment I went to pick him up.   The vet determined that he had a bite injury that split a toe in half.  The bones were grating together.   The constant pain must have been horrific.   The toe was amputated and the leg looked much better immediately.   Right now he is recuperating at my house.   Because I have a full house, he will go back to the West Orange neighborhood in 10 days or so to brave another winter outdoors.   I'm positive that Momma Cat will be thrilled to have her best friend back and someone to bundle with through the cold months.   Meanwhile, the search for a home for these two sweet cats continues.

8 days after his surgery I brought Petey back to his old neighborhood.  It's very sad to put him back outdoors, but I cannot keep him.  I also miss him.  He is a lovable little guy.  Shortly after releasing him I saw him run across the yard like any normal cat.  When Mama Kitty came to eat that night they welcomed each other rubbing heads.
